In 1939 at 16 years old, I was the youngest shorthand typist working in the Education Department in Chester (Cheshire County Council).
Staff were taken to Runcorn to type the lists for all the children to be evacuated. We worked into the early hours and slept in chairs on Friday night, the 1st September.
On the Saturday 2nd September, we were taken to the station at Widnes(where chidren were being put on trains and taken to Blackpool), to supervise their departure.
I came home on Sunday morning and heard the declaration of war on the radio.
