I was trained at Yatesbury and sent to the radar-station at Dunnet Head. This was at the time the most northerly occupied place in Britain, due to Forces personnel.
One time, whilst on duty, we picked up 7 mini-submarines on the radar-screens. These were being escorted by the Royal Navy through to Scapa Flow.
On duty one night we had what we called a white out. This was caused by the dropping of silver-foil strips that caused obliteration of the signals on the screen, this was used to block out tracing aircraft.
I was sent to hospital with broken toes, for a week. The Matron was a very attractive female and I was a bit cheeky. When lunch was being served I was told that there would be no lunch untill I found out what the German POW would like to eat, not being told that he could only have a boiled egg. Having gone through gesticulations I found that he would like the lunch that was offered, it was then that I was told he could only have an egg! Having found that out I then had to return to ask if he would like fried, poached or boiled. (I could speak German albeit only a few words.) This sorted I was told that I could now have some lunch.
On returning to the station there were a lot of new faces as most of the operatives had been sent to Norway.
Shortly after that we were recruiting for radar-mechanics. I was then sent back to Yatesbury. On travelling down by train we had to stop outside London as there was a doodlebug flying over. We had to wait for the all-clear before we could proceed.
