Crawford was called up at the beginning of the war, as he was in the R.N.V.R's before the war. He was drafted to HMS Victory in Portsmouth and from there to HMS Canton, which was an armed merchant cruiser. The ship did patrol work in December 1939 and later he went on convoy work between Freetown in West Africa and Greenock in Scotland.
The ship had many alarms especially from U- boats that came to attack convoys. Sometimes it was down in the South Atlantic hunting for blockade runners.
It was a happy ship but he left it in 1942, went back to HMS Victory and from there to HMS Hydra which was a fleet mine sweeper.
