I have a very vivid memory of WW2, particularly the last year. In those days, I lived at Heston Middlesex, and where I live, I can remember flying bombers coming over, and once when I was cycling home down my road, I had a grand-stand of one coming over. I could see the flames from the jet propulsion engine, and I had the perfect view. About five minutes later, and lucky for me I heard the bang way away in the distance, otherwise it could have been me.
On another occasion we had one landed within half a mile of where I lived. It made a tremendous bang, and shook my home quite badly. Fortunately we were far enough away, so I have very vivid memories of the V1鈥檚. I also remember V2 rockets hitting a Packard factory of the Great West Road, it was only four miles away from where I lived, and came out of the blue, and I鈥檓 sorry to say it killed about forty-five people that day. They had no chance.
One final thing, on May the 8th 1945, I can well remember being outside Buckingham Palace with my parents, cheering like mad along with thousands of people, it was a great day, and I remember seeing Winston Churchill with the King and Queen appearing on the balcony. It really was a marvellous day.
