Aboard Searcher. My father is on the right.

My father joined HMS Searcher as a 17 year old and was, I believe an asdic/sonar operator.

He seldom spoke of those days but when he did it was with admiration for the pilots who flew from the decks in their old fashion bi-planes. His words.

The sadness at the loss of the many young pilots during take off and landing operations was the other thing he often mentioned.
"Life was cheap in those days." He would say as we walked our dog.

His mood would change when asked about the bright lights of New York and the runs ashore with his shipmates.

Sadly my father died at the young age of 42 in 1969. He left a few photos and some souvenirs of New York.
