A part of the wartime routine, was a nightly check that no glimmer of light showed through the black curtains which was drawn over the normal curtains or as some did, put up boards over the windows. Sometimes an ARP warden walking the streets could be heard to shout towards a particular house 鈥減ut that light out鈥 And so everyone checked that their curtains were properly closed and no light could be seen from the outside.
My Father once reported Cort Crescent School to an ARP Warden on duty in his hut when someone had obviously accidentally left a light on and had not closed the curtain, but the warden said he could not leave his post and as such the light was picked up by an enemy plane and a building nearby was bombed during the air raid.
