I can only remember going away on holiday once during the latter part of the war - it was in late October 1944 or 1945. I suppose I was lucky. My aunt and uncle (Mr. & Mrs. Harold Shaw) had friends in Torquay (Mrs. Violet& Mr.Dai Williams, 51 Carlton Road, Ellscombe, Torquay). Five of us went, Mum, Grandad, Aunt, Uncle and myself. We travelled by Night Train via Plymouth and I remember the train was shunted into a railway siding near Plymouth whan an air raid was threatened.

In Torquay we could not get onto the beaches as they were mined and barb-wired presumably to stop foreign landings. We had one or two air raid scares whilst there.

Food, of course was very simple. Dai did sone fishing and I helped pick the winkles out of their shells after Auntie Vi had boiled them. My Grandad and Uncle loved any shellfish,i.e. cockles, winkles and mussels.

We travelled home during the day which was much better and we had no delays on the return journey.
