This story was submitted to the People's War site by Martin Evans, on behalf of Rodney Davis and has been added to the site with his kind permission. Rodney fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was born in December 1939, so I was six when the war ended.

What stays in my mind is being in my mothers arms on the way to an air raid shelter when a convoy of planes flew overhead. I鈥檇 never seen anything like it before.

I can also remember going to my Grandfathers pub in Froome, which was full of American soldiers. They all gave me sweets and it was the first time that I ever saw a black man.
