This story was submitted to the peoples war site by Wendy Young and has been added on behalf of Dorothy Brannon with her permission and she fully understands the site,s terms and conditions I joined the services through the barracks of Aldershot whereby they had a territorial system which had already been started for women.
We all congregated at the barracks in the first week of the war, there were so many of us that it was decided to form the ATS and WAAFS; the WRENS were formed later. I joined the WAAFS and with twenty others was marched unceremoniously by a sergeant to a small aerodrome, Odiham in Hampshire, where the squadron had just been posted abroad. There were still a lot of officers left, and the people who kept the station going.
During that period you could only be a waitres or a cook, it was all very strange to us having to serve these men. From that time we were supplied with a uniform which we became very proud of, we were also taught how to drill at the station.
After a time we were disbanded and sent to other posts. I was sent to an aerodrome called Milden Hall where there were Wellington Bombers. We got to know the men very well and when some didn't return from a bombing mission we became very depressed
