Evacuated to Herringfleet from Gorleston I stayed in the 'Old School House; now a Sunday School. It was owned by Lord Somerleyton and occupied by the Gamekeeper, my grandfather Rupert Fox.
Memories of a German airman being captured by farm workders after ditching on Haddiscoe marshes - he was brought to the house where he sat in the kitchen and took off his tunic buttons and gave them to me - this was 1944 and I was 3 years old.
I believe he stayed in England working on a farm.
I lost the buttons in 1964 during a house move.
OTHER MEMORIES:
We had an Anderson shelter and a Morrison shelter.
Ration books for various food.
As I was a baby our mother had to collect orange juice, National dried milk and cod liver oil from the Welfare Centre.
Clothes were homemade - usually cut down.
Shoes were mended at home - father had a 'last'.
Groceries were not pre-packed, butter was potted into shape, sugar scooped into a handmade bag and bacon, meat and cheese were sliced and cut. Biscuits and sweets were loose.
In spite of my grandfather being a gamekeeper, my father was a first class poacher - we lived off the land on rabbits, pheasants, hare, partridge etc. Eggs were preserved in a clear fluid and we also had dried egg.
One of my toys was a wooden top with a whip.
