THE END OF THE WAR
The fifteenth of August is my wife鈥檚 birthday.
On the 15th of August 1945 my wife was seven and I was a month older.
My mother and father and I got up very early on that day to catch the first bus into Maidstone to go to the railway station.
We got on the bus at the terminus at the top of our road and someone was saying that the war in the far East against Japan was over.
We went to London to meet my brother and sister who had sailed home to England after having been evacuated to Canada in 1940 before I was two years old. London was going wild with joy.
So there it was that suddenly I had an eleven year old brother and a thirteen year old sister after having been an only child for five years. They both had Canadian accents which much intrigued the local children who came round just to hear them speak.
