This contribution to People’s War was received by the Action Desk at ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cleveland and submitted to the website, with the permission and on behalf of Fred Stearman.
Aged 12 when the war started, the school in Middlesbrough was closed and we were all evacuated to Scarborough. We were sent to a hotel, 10 aged 11, 10 aged 12; with two school teachers. The hotel owner had no experience of looking after so many children and as it was the first time most of us had been away from home. We had to become suddenly self-sufficient, looking after ourselves a well as taking part in the running of the hotel, including serving food. A culture shock for those of us used to being looked after by our Mothers!
When it came to Springtime, the hotel owners wanted us all to leave so there were be room for their holiday guests — they didn’t seem to realise there was a war on!!
