My name is Doris Frost, and I鈥檓 in my 93rd year.
I had a young baby during the war. I come from Doncaster. My husband was called up. It was when they were asking for Bevan boys. He didn鈥檛 pass for that. He was an undertaker really! He didn鈥檛 pass for the navy, either, with his eye sight, so they put him in the Pioneer Corps. He was shipped off to France rather quickly. He went down South to Maidstone, then was shipped off from there. He was repairing the roads behind the lines when there was a big battle at Caen in France. He was only in the army about 18 months, and then he was released. I suppose the government got rid of the Pioneer Corps, so that was the end of his job.
Back at home, my daughter was born in 1941, so I had a youngster to look after. We lived on a street, and there were some fields at the end of it. When the planes came over, we used to go and stand in the fields. You could hear the planes buzzing above you, and then you could hear them going away, so you knew you could go back home. They did drop some bombs close to, but it didn鈥檛 hit where I lived. I don鈥檛 think they did a great deal of damage (near us), but there were some bombs dropped.
We had various evacuees from London to the locality too. The lady next door had some. I think I said I would have some. They came just before my daughter was born, but it wasn鈥檛 convenient just at the time, so I suppose they forgot about it, and I didn鈥檛 have to have any.
