Ruth Larrett joined the TA in Ipswich Drill Hall, the 11th Suffolk Platoon, in April 1939, and was called up on 3rd September. On 6th I was sent to the Woolwich Arsenal. Nothing was ready for us, had to sleep on the floor in a garage. Our Commandant, Lady Blanche Cobbold, of Cobbolds Brewery, was not happy, and sent two of her Beer lorries to feth us home.
I was then sent to a Searchlight site at Mistley - I remember snow and duckboards!
Transferred later to various A.A. H.Qs - 32nd Searchlight regiment, then various Brigades then to H.Q. 2nd A.A. Group, NCO in charge 'G'Ops, Uxbridge - next to H.Q. 11 Fighter Group. This lasted from 1942 to 45.
Exciting time preparing for D Day. One movement order was 32 pages long. A busy time often working 'til the small hours, then on duty again next morning. Everything was Top Secret. Demobbed November 1945. Awarded the B.E.M.
