At the start of WWII, the British Armed Forces attempted to recruit the services of my great-uncl Alex. As a pacifist, however, Alex refused and as a result was forced to work on a farm for the duration of the war. Ironically, the British Army had better luck with another member of the family as they managed to recruit my grand-mother, Flora, and she saw out the war in London!

I really love this story as the role-reversal reflects the changing attitudes towards the role of women - and to some extent, men - in society.
