I lived with father in Liverpool when war broke out. Our house was bombed in May 1941; I went to the shelter when the bombs dropped. My father was the air raid warden and was killed in the bombing.
My brother was invalided out of the RAF in 1938 after a training accident over the Irish Sea. He lived in Hemswell and arrangements were made for me to live with him.
When I was fourteen I had a job at the Monks Arms at Caenby Corner. In 1944 the Hemswell Airfield was bombed and a tanker on the way to Glentham was hit. I saw the flames from the hotel veranda.
