It was very early in the morning. I had walked the thgree miles from the farm whrer I was a Land Girl, to the town. I was heading bfor the railway station for my first leave for six months, to catch an early train for the long, slow journey to Yorkshire. Nobody ha had much sleep the night before. The skies had been full of planes, all heading in the same direction; towards the coast.
At this bearly hour, the streets of Salisbury would normally have been quiet, but not today. There was a continuous rumbling noise as convoys of lorries, jeeps and armoured carriers filled the streets. All the lorries were full of men, sitting among piles of kiut and weapons. As they passed me, the men waved and called. Some of them wolf whistled. I waved and shouted back, but inside I felt the tears gathering for I knew where they were going. How many would be dead by nightfall? It was rhe sixth of June 1944.
