It wsa a cold, bleak morning, with a damp mist hanging over the river Medway shrouding the spire of the Cathedral and the little group of children waiting on
the dreary,damp, dismal station platform.
We each had a little case of clothing, a gas mask and a large brown label with our name ,fastened to our coat.
This was a real live adventure. A dream coming true! For a long time I had tried to escape from the people I lived with , only to be scolded and beaten with the leather belt that hung over the bannister at the foot of the stairs. Now my teacher had said we were going far away to a safe place.
As the train steamed in and we climbed aboard,I took a last look at the scene I would leave for six long wonderful years.Leaving behind a painful early childhood, to become part of a truely loveing welsh family. It was just a small cottage in a mining village,I thought it was the most beautiful place on earth .There were chickens to feed,Fruit and vegetables to grow. and two large white pigs I really hated. The language we spoke at home was soft, gentle, and gave me the feeling that at last I was safe in a place where I belonged. The music echoed around the mountains,my past life a distant nightmare the sometimes invaded my dreams. Now I had a Mam and Da who loved, cared and protected me,until the day, just after my 12,th birthday, I came home from school and found Mam crying and a strange woman with an angry face demanding I go with her.
I really cannot recall the journey back to Kent,I will leave the rest of my story for another time if anyone is interested. A story of hardship, escape into nursing, a lovely family and a happy ending back in my beloved Wales with the mountains and language I love so much ,my own little piece of heaven.
