This story was told to Sheila Jones at Birchington Library - and the author is aware of the conditions set out by the 大象传媒.
My name is Jill and I was 7 when the war started. I was an only child, pampered by my mother, my parents being divorced when I was a baby.
I remember the bombs dropping onto Coventry, thinking that they sounded like fireworks. Leamington was considered a very safe place to live, hence I was never evacuated. I can remember an air-raid and being taken from my bed to a cellar in a nearby house. No bombs actually dropped near us.
However evacuees were sent to Leamington. I remember a Czech girl coming to my school, her name was Eva Fleischman.
The billeting officer came around to see what spare room we had and my mother took in several adults that had been bombed out in Coventry.
Before I started school I had an Austrian governess, who was very fond of Hitler. My mother was told she was a spy. Was she involved in the Lockheed bombing?
Another thing I remember is the long queues. My mother had to queue for hours for things like bread, meat, in fact for everything. Rationing for food and clothing made life very difficult.
I attended a private school from 7 to 11 years and then to a Prep. school until 14.
After the war I came to Minnis Bay in Birchington where I went to Queen Bertha,s School where I was a day boarder.
