My father had been out all night on ARP duty and mother, my sister and I had slept in the basement because there was a large raid over Manchester. About 7am, father returned home, called down the steps: "I think you can come up now". And no sooner had he said it, then there was an almighty explosion. And mother said: "I don't think I'll come up yet".
We found out afterwards a plane had jettisoned a landmine over Cadshaw Bridge and had made a huge hole in the ground ... fortunately no damage. The crater soon became a beautiful pool full of wild-life - I'm sure it is still there today!
