When I was eight I went to a small convent school in Parkstone Dorset. The school had no shelters so we had to run to the nearby Alexander Park and use the public shelters. One day coming back after the all clear we saw a dogfight in the sky above us and the German plane was shot down. The pilot managed to get out but his parachute did not open early enough and he hit the ground a few yards from the entrance of the convent. The nuns got all the children in and closed the big gates. An older girl climbed over to have a look. She told us the pilot was a bloody mess and the women around were fighting for the parachute silk. The pilot was dragged away by his legs to an ambulance. Straight after school I rushed to the place and saw the trail of blood covered by sawdust.
