3rd May 1941 鈥 Blitz.

Five girls (including May Moore and her sister, Irene Rothwell, who submitted the information) and their mother, living on Aughton Street, had trouble finding shelter during the air raids. At the time, a 鈥淏ig Bertha鈥 was letting off bombs near Great Homer Street, and a nearby church to the house of the family who was bombed. The family had to go to Seacombe Street, down the road from their house, to find shelter because everywhere in their road (Aughton Street) was full. The shelter they found was very basic 鈥 it had no back or front, and the only seating was large bricks that had belonged to buildings that had been bombed but now lay scattered on the floor. There was also a problem with water running through the bomb shelter because of bad planning of the drains before the bomb shelters had been built. The German 鈥淏ig Bertha鈥 bomber at the time let off bombs down Great Homer Street. The fires from buildings nearby made bomb shelters so hot that some people had to leave. The mother of the family left the children in the bomb shelter during one raid to return to her house and make cocoa to soothe the children鈥檚 nerves. When they returned to their house after one air raid, they found that the glass at the front of the house had blistered due to the heat of a nearby bomb that had gone off. The lady also remembered German machine guns killing people whilst they desperately searched for shelter, and body parts lying in the street after the Blitz.
