I always wanted to join the fire service, but nver could. I had a job in 1939 as a timber tusher, which was a reserved occupation.
This ment that I couldn't go into any other job, and I didn't really want this, I wanted desperatly to be in the fire service.
I ended up joining Gloucester Aircraft Companies fire service in Novemeber 1941 as a cadet.
This was the start of the carear that I wanted and I ended up having 29 years with the fire service. This was followed by 21 years with the ambulance service.
I remeber the day that bombs dropped on Easter Saturday 1942 4.30 in the afternoon between the car park and the canteen buildings at GAC. Workers were just leaving for the day so there were many injuries, but this was the start of me actually being a proper firefighter.
