On VE day arrangements were made to have a short church service in the open air in an a peaches and nectarine orchard. This was to be followed by a football match between German POWs and a Polish Regiments team.
A pulpit was made out of scrap wood for the Padre to use during the service. Unfortunately the Padre was the worse for wear having been drinking cherry brandy. At this location the brandy was in abundance. This resulted in the Padre having to be tied to the pulpit in order for him to stay upright. The service completed a meal of corned beef was issued and this was followed by the match.
Needless to say the match was rather physical, no holds bared. The more physical it became the more the supporters cheered and encouraged them. It was muted that the organiser had sadistic tendancies as it would have been a no love lost match.
