In the early 1940's i used to return to Plymouth after a weekends leave on an overnight train from Manchester to the Wset Country.
The trains in those days were usually very crowded and this particular train was no exception. It carried servicemen of all types as well as a number of civillian personnel. We were tightly packed together and contact could not be avoided.
The lights in the compartment were wartime dimmed and combined with the motion of the train everyone was soon fast asleep usually with their head on their neighbour's shoulder.
On one occasion my head rested on the shoulder of a Land Army girl and she in turn rested on her other neighbour's shoulder and so on.
In the early hours of the next morning we all woke with a start as the train shudderd to a halt at a country station south of Bristol. All the Land Army girls including my neighbour got up and made for the carriage exit door. As my Land Army companion was about to step on to the platform she turned around to face all the occupants of the compartment. Pointed a finger at me and in a loud clear voice said
"Young Sailor-lad, never tell anyone that you have never slept with a woman!"
As a rather innocent young sailor i continued my journey rather red faced and accompanied with ribald comment from the other servicemen.
