I was 3 years old when the war started.
My father worked at Avery Scales in Birmingham. He spent his nights in the local fire station. While there he seemed to spend most of his time putting out incendiary bombs with a stirrup pump. I remember when the bombs dropped on the Avery works they lit up the bedrooms of our house.
When we had to go down to air raid shelter even though I was only 3
we always took our handbags with us, I made sure I had the sweet coupons in mine.
My mother and I spent a lot of time making mats out of old sugar bags, coats and other rags.
