In a communal shelter, we had an old chap who had Parkinsons disease and because it was winter he had a very bad cough. Every time he coughed we thought he was spraying people with spittle. But the next day my father's godmother asked us if we'd felt splashes on us all night because she'd been spraying us with holy water to keep us safe during the air raids!
I remember being frightened to death. I was 18, there were bombs dropping everywhere. Salford Cathedral isn't far from the docks so bombs that missed them were falling on the houses.
My father was in St. John Ambulance, he went to a house and it was a friend who'd been injured. She later died as a result.
I have never spoken about what I saw then until now, find it very hard. Now that I'm 80, I find it's time to get rid of the memories.
