The only thing we could hear were the German planes going over to bomb Clydebank. We knew something was happening as we could see the flares going up. We were in Moniaive and the planes were going overhead.

We knew that they were German planes because they made boom boom noise unlike the British planes which had a more regular engine sound. The sky was all lit up although Clydebank was over 60 miles away. A German plane came down about 10 miles away from us.My father was in the Home Guard and they all went to look for the pilot.

We were on a farm, sheep and cattle. We didn't have land girls, but had help from the older men who were too old to join up.

Late in the war POWs came from Cargenbridge. They were dropped of in the morning and collected at night. Italians and Germans. They were very nice. Most were happy to be here I think. (Margaret) We liked the Norwegians as they gave us chocolate.

(Edward) War was just a way of life. I was eight when the war began and I don't remember much before the war. The war was just a way of life. It was hard for the women. When you were young you weren't frightened. Must have been the age.

Being on a farm rationing didn't affect us so much. We used to grow our own oats and make oatmeal. We used to collect blackberrries, raspberries and wild strawberries for jam. Mother used to save the sugar. (Margaret) Mother used to make Rosehip syrup for the babies and we used to collact spagnum moss for dressings.

(Edward) We used to colelct paper I suppose it was for recycling. We used to collect it in sacks and take it to school. The headmaster would give us a half day off school if we had a lot of paper to collect.
My brother didn't go into the army as he worked on the farm.
