Have you ever heard of the carry cots that had a gas mask unit fitted to it?
My mother has described it to me. Apparently she used to put me in one to take me to the air raid shelters. These were close to Heaton Mersey Square, Stockport.I think it was Stockport Road between Cheadle Heath and Heaton Mersey Square. They looked like sandstone. They are probably still there but are still boarded up.
My father wasn't allowed to go to the war. He worked for Crossley Brothers in Openshaw, Manchester. They had the largest boring machines (like drilling machines) in the country which were needed for the Tuuret guns on the battleships. I think that's why they tried to bomb the factory.
My mother used to say that my father was okay with thunder and lightening but was terrified of the bombs. My mother was the opposite, she was terrified of thunder and lightening but okay with the bombs.
