v Welding Shoes

My name is Melly Herne I was 18 years old when war broke out I lived on the edge of Hounslow and avoided being called up by looking after my pregnant sister and working as an electric welder at a company called Roadless traction company
We made caterpillar tracks for vehicles that go over swamps and deserts to retrieve crashed aircraft. I used to work in thick smoke and wear a heavy welding mask a welders hour was 55mins you were allowed 5 mins to breathe in the fresh air at the door we were also allowed 1/3 of a pint of milk and extra bread ration as we worked in industry but once the rationing shortages got worse they stopped that. one day Bomber Harris came to the factory to give us all a pep talk, there is a statue to him in Parliament square. I used to work the early shift 6am till 2pm and some times in the morning I had to get off my bike and wheel it round bomb craters in the road after the nights raid I also so made anti gas goggles they had to be stuck together
