You might think a child of three couldn't remember anything much about the war. But I do remember one incident.
My grandfather was standing at the back door of our house at East Bergholt in Suffolk. I remember him saying "Look out, one's coming!" as a doodlebug came over from the Netherlands. I think the Dutch base, used by the Nazi occupiers, may have been called Peenamunda? He then bundled me under the table in the front room. I looked out of the window, and could see it coming!
I was too young to know what "war" was -- I had no sense of danger at all. Only later, when I saw young men with arms missing, and our neighbour returned from a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp, did I understand.
