We had an Anderson air raid shelter in the garden but we didn鈥檛 use it. We usually sat in the pantry which was under the stairs. One evening sitting there when the siren had sounded, Mum, who was a heavy smoker, suddenly remembered she hadn鈥檛 brought an ash tray. She went back to the dining room to fetch one. While she was there, a bomb dropped in the park at the back of our house. She could have been killed rather than drop ash on the pantry floor. The windows at the back of our house were fine, but the windows at the front had been damaged.
