My father, a widower was speaking to our next door neighbour's wife, a Highland Lady just after a ration delivery of a tin of corned beef. When the lady asked? What can you do with a tin of corned beef? Dad replied "I make stock for soup and then use the beef. "Och I have never heard of that how do you do that" she asked. "I punch holes in the tin with a hammer and nail to make the stock and then open the tin" We never heard if she had tried it. Just a bit of humour from difficult times.
