I was a member of the Staff of the N. W. H. Denbigh. I joined the Navy coincedentally 64 yrs to tomorrow which was
the 10nth of September.
I eventually arrived in the R.N H Stonehouse
Plymouth where I went into training as a
Sick Berth Attendant [ S.B.A.]
When I qualified I served in attachments to Fleet Air Arm Stations When I reciejved a draft chit to join a Ship named T.S.S
Canterbury which was going to be my home for
the next 3yrs.
When I arrived I found that I was there alone without a Medical Officer and an empty Sick Bay, so I had to start putting the place into a servicable establishment.
Iremained in this postion till 9 months before D. Day when I was joined by a MEDICAL Officercand 2 S.B. A`s.
D.Day arrived on 6th of June 1944 when we
landed 2 Canadian Regiments at 0700 hrs.
We remained there till 16.00 hrs when we were detailed to return to " Blighty " to load up with American Troops and retwurn that night to Omaha Beachhead to relieve a
somewhat hard pressed tsituation there.
We did this by following the progress of the troops and my last sailing was to Ostend
in December 19th `1944, when I returned to be detailed to join the R.A.M.C. in the Army School of Hygiene forJungle Warfare
Training in preparation for posting to Far East as the intention was to invade Japan
itself, that is the mainland. Fortunately for myself and many others like me, this was cancelled when tjhe Atom Bombs were dropped, which saved millions of lives. I
remained in the Navy until I was demobbed in August 1946.
I had 2 elder brothers and my wife in the R.A. F and a brother and myself in the Navy
and by the Grace of God we survived and returned home
