Early in August 1944 I was posted with the Women's Royal Naval Service to Brightlingsea on the Essex coast. My job was Duty Wren Visual Signaller, working alone at the local pub which had a high tower. As I cooked an egg one day, in the distance I suddenly saw a strange object in the sky which seemed to be coming straight for the tower. The object, a sort of flying bomb, made a "Brrrhing-Popping" noise and got louder and louder. Thankfully, the bomb passed over the tower, and exploded in a wood about two miles away. Meantime I had fallen to the floor and covered my uniform in sticky egg! I plotted the incident and continued to watch the skyline.
Although I had two postings with HMS President, and ten other WRNS signallers on the end of Spurn Point in Yorkshire, this incident in Essex stands out in my memory as the most exciting and worrying of my service career.
