This stgory has been added to The People's War Website by CSV Volunteer, Ann Toomey, on ehalf of the author, Margaret Liddington, who fully understqnds the terms and conditions of the site.

At the start of the War I was 5 years old and my Dad was an ARP Warden. I remember him going out of an evening, we didn't see him until the next morning.

I also remember the siren going, being picked up and wrapped up in a blanket and taken down to the shelter in the garden. It was a small garden with a patch of grass and a greenhouse where Dad grew tomatoes, ubnder the windows at the back there was a paved area where we grew roses

Depending on what my Dad was doing, he often would pop his head around the door to see if we were okay

One night the sirens sounded and we heard the planes overhead.`My brother was still at home then - he was older than me and later he was evacuated, I think to
acclesfield. Dad picked us up and stood us on top of the shelter he said "the planes are gong over - it's not for us, it's for Coventry" - "Look at the sky" - it was red - it was Coventry being bombed! It felt as though we were so neare to Coventry but we knew that we were on the edge and therefore safe.
