My Mother once came down from the North East to London to help me choose my wedding dress, and we were staying in the Regent Palace Hotel. This is when the doodlebugs were flying over and the sirens kept going off, so we had to keep going down to the shelters. After a few times of getting in and out we decided to stay there 鈥 I said 鈥淥h Mother, nothing鈥檚 going to hit this place鈥 -it was hit a week later! (I never told her).
Our rooms were side-by-side and one morning Mother was wakened at about 2 o鈥檆lock by a knock at the door and answered it to find this yank leaning against the door frame saying 鈥淗ello Jenny鈥 鈥 Now, Mother was about 5 foot nothing, had a boudoir cap on, no teeth and no glasses, so I think they were both as shocked as each other 鈥 but my Mother couldn鈥檛 work out why he was calling 鈥淛enny鈥.
Another time, in Maidstone at the start of the invasion I cycled over to see her and she told me how she鈥檇 been 鈥渒ept awake by hornets buzzing about over the hotel鈥 鈥 it was the invasion! The aircraft towing gliders, but because of her bad-hearing she was adamant they were hornets.
