The time in the hight of the Battle for the skies over England, I was attending Lady Margaret Road junior school at the time. The sirens had sounded and it was just about the time for going home to dinner. Walking along the alley way I heard the sound of very low flying aircraft. As youngsters feel no fear, I just stood and watched a Dornier, being shot down by a spitfire. I suddenly heard a sound just to my left a there were a line of little holes in the tarmac. Me and some other boys started straight away to did the bullets up to show others. Late home for dinner - mother's anger at me being late was worse than being machine-gunned.
