My Grandad was 13 yrs old when War broke out, he said it was the most terrifying time of his life but he still thought it would be a big adventure.
When air raids took place he went into the Anderson shelter which was in the back garden, he said it was cold and damp but they still had a lot of fun in there. When the air raids were over they went outside looking for souvenirs and even bits of planes and bombs that had exploded!
Across the road was the local shop which had also been bombed, this was upsetting but also made him angry because everything that people had worked for had been lost.
When they went for a walk once, grandad found a German plane but the pilot was dead! He took advantage of looking for some souvenirs and he found a metal plate that had been broken off a wing flap and also a half broken medal which had something written in German on it. They thought it might have been from the pilot's jacket or something similar. The next day some soldiers found the plane and closed the area for further examination but whenever he found the chance he always went back, looking for some more bits and pieces.
He said that the biggest challenge was staying in the Anderson shelter with mum, dad and his annoying brother and sister!
