My father used to relate this story about being picked up from the beach at Dunkirk. He was wading out to a rescue boat and the water was up to his chest. The boat appeared to be turning away so he held up a bottle of wine to attract their attention. He said that the bottle of wine was the reason they came back to pick him up.
