My dear Pete
This letter brings bad news. Michael is at last quite definitely reported as killed in action about 14th September. Apparently they now have positive evidence, for the official notification is unequivocal, and has been confirmed by his C.O. separately. So the first break in the circle has come. Avenge him boy, again and again.
We are all very proud of you. It鈥檚 something to say casually when Africa is mentioned 鈥淥h yes, I have a boy in the Artillery out there.鈥 How good if you and Mike could have met. He would have gloried in that advance.
Much love
Dad
First Army Thanksgiving Service for the Victory granted to THE ALLIES in NORTH AFRICA
Almighty and everlasting God, we give Thee humble thanks for the memory and good example of Thy servants who have laid down their lives in the service of our country. We bless Thee for their courage and devotion. Accept their sacrifice we pray Thee, let it not be in vain that they have died in the cause of righteousness and honour.
鈥淭hey shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them.鈥
