I have many memories of the war during which time I was a child growing up in Handley and Clutton in Cheshire. Home was a tenant cottage in the grounds of 'Aldersley Hall' dad worked here in the market garden, during the war the market garden had to close and the actual hall was taken over by the army as a base. I have a few memories, the blackout regulations, the family all gathering at 6pm to listen to the news for the latest update. As a youngster this time wasn't really very scary but my mother and father saw things differently as they had lived through the 1st World War. In the neighbouring fields there were often planes making emergency landings and on one occasion I remember a plane landing on a cow, it wasn't a pretty sight! There was another occasion when a bomb landed in the field neighbouring our cottage fortunatley it didn't explode, but the army came and around and warned my mother that they needed to disarm the bomb and it may be advisable to take us out of the area just in case, we thought it was great because mum took us out for the day we had a picnic by a local river it was lovely.
School days where also very different, because we lived more than 3 miles from the school each child was issued with a pair of wellies as a ration. We also used to take a tin to school where we got a ration of co-co it was lovely. Again another school memory I have is that of taking in old 1/2 penny coins that where going into a collection and sent off somewhere to provide aid.
Gas masks - These had to be carried everywhere we went, we my sister and I where looking at some birds on a local brook when my sister's gas mask dropped in, she was in big trouble over that.
These are my memories and I'm happy to share them with you.
