My memories of the beginning of WW2 are fleeting, a series of little snapshots stored in my head, and although I do not recall actual conversations of the adults around me, I think in many instances, what I write reflects what I overheard.
"WAR HAS BEEN DECLARED"
reads the headline
in bold, black print
and grinning newsboys
sell out their stacks of papers
as lights dim
introducing
BLACKOUT
before long
we'll learn first hand
what war's about.
UNEMPLOYMENT
is not a problem now
no one's on the dole
and wages are high
making munitions
to feed the guns
the neighbours' sons man
while the enemy aims
to put them
out of action.
