I can remember doing our geometry exam and the sirens went. We had to pick everything up, papers, set squares, compasses the lot, and head for the shelters.
Usually when we went it was a break from lessons and we used to play games, memory games for example and sing. That was the first year, so after that we had to do more educational things, as directed by our teachers!

The day war broke out, my father was a policeman and he went out with a flat cap on, tin hat over his shoulder and when he came back he had a tin hat on and gas mask at the ready!
