Anne was just two years old when war broke out, just a wee tot. She and her family who had always been farmers lived in East Didsbury on Kingsway. There were not many houses there then, but close by was a builder called Pondsford. He had a rough piece of land next to Annes's home and it was there that builder Pondsford built a strong underground sheltet 'Tough enough to withstand a bomb' for all the childrenof the district to shelter in. When there was a raid Mother and Babies, sisters, cousins and brothers would all pile out of their houses , run down to the shelter. It was the safest place for miles. People played games down there and there was furniture and blankets to make it comfortable.
One night the siren went and one of Anne's older sisters grabbed Anne and a candle to rush out to the shelter. The wind caught the candle flame sending it back into their faces. Annes hair caught fire, which was such a shock for both of them, With yelling and crying the pair were bustled down to the shelter - thge hair was put out with a damp towel and the children calmed and soothed after their fright. So all ended well.
