Large water tanks which were made as a source of water for fire fighting purposes and large brick built air raid shelters were both placed on streets and roads in Leicester. Anderson shelters were also built in people's back gardens. The doctor who lived across the road from us, John Victor Tollington had his own private air raid shelter. A brick built shelter sunk into his orchard which floooded in the winter.

The local butcher rang my father asking for use of our shed to hang one or two carcasses as the meat inspector was coming round!
