D-Day Dover鈥檚 role in fooling the Germans was that the attack on Europe would come from the Dover area.
Where the ferry port is now in modern Dover, during the war this area had not been reclaimed or developed. In this area a lot of old boats had been placed and covered in canvas, which had been painted to look like landing barges.
One day sitting on the cliffs at East Cliff, looking down on these dummy landing barges we saw a German aircraft coming from the other end of Dover from the Arch Cliff end.
All sorts of anti-aircraft fire were being fired at the German. When he was over the dummy landing barges he dropped his bomb. The canvass rose up and settled back in place showing almost no signs of damage.
The German turned seaward and came back for another go. This he did to the same effect. So he came in for another go, but the third time he was unlucky. He was hit and caught fire and crashed into the sea.
