I was at Varndean and there was lots of aircraft activity, we’re talking about 1943 I suppose, and this aircraft flew over and suddenly its engine stopped. There’s this aircraft spiralling down and it crashed about a hundred yards from where I was sitting. It was in Patcham, between two hedges, Farm Road or Farm Close and the pilot was killed and there was fire and bricks exploding — absolute chaos.

As it came down, we ran to the site of the crash.
