We were in a dangerous spot where we lived, the railway line was nearby and the gun factory was across the river. We didn鈥檛 realise how dangerous it was really. On Landmere Lane we had these massive guns they were huge. I remember a particular night during a raid on Nottingham they were firing the guns the noise off them was terrible. My sister and I were in bed and we heard something rattling on the roof, we were wondering what it was, thinking it was an incendiary or something. Next morning I was standing on the windowsill of the bedroom, my sister was helping me. It was a huge piece of shrapnel from these guns, it was in the gutter. I kept it for years and years.
