My memories of the war are sort of snapshots ... I would be about two or three years old ... In Ballasalla, my father owned a radio and cycle shop, and behind us were huts where the Fleet Air Arm were based. Both the lads and the girls were always round the shop because my dad would tune into a radio and the would listen to it.
I was very little, but I remember that they used to walk passed to the airport. I used to copy them and march up and down and shout to them. I used to shout: "good luck to the boys in blue and the ginny wrens" ... I learned that from my father.
I became a sort of little mascot.
They (the boys and girls) used to come round and dad would lend them a bike. They put a wooden board across the handle bar and I used to sit on there and ride around. We used to go on little picnics. It was such a glorious time for me, as a child, because there was always something going on and I got so much attention.
